What causes pigment spots to develop

Each person is different, so we also differ in our skin reactions to external effects. Therefore, the causes of developing of pigment spots may be diverse. In today's article, besides the causes, we also talk about the proper treatment of pigment spots, providing a solution for those who are fighting this problem.

Nature has created human skin to protect itself naturally from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation, since there is always a skin surface that we find difficult to hide from the sun's rays. The human body is able to exert a protection mechanism to defend the deeper layers of the skin against the harmful rays of the sun.

Let's see now, how tanning normally works, what tilts the balance of the process and how can we protect us against it? These questions are answered, here, in today's blog post of L'amia Natura.

Natural process of skin tanning

Pigment cells in the lower layer of the epithelium are responsible for the original colour of our skin. They help to produce a pigment in the skin called melanin, as a result of which our skin becomes a darker shade after sunbathing. It is actually a defence mechanism because melanin protects our skin from ultraviolet radiation.

If melanin is produced irregularly, pigmentation disorders can develop, which leads us to suppose that something is not working harmoniously in our body. It can result in appearance of skin lesions such as “liver spots”, or freckles in case of people of light skin tone.

What may be the causes of developing pigment spots?

Many human and environmental factors can stimulate the production of melanin together, or even individually. Such an external effect can be the extreme sunbathing, when too much UV radiation affects our skin. The excessive melanin production process appears not on the whole body surface, but evidentially on the most sun exposed skin areas: on the face, nose, ears, shoulders, forehead, neck and décolleté, hands, etc. External factors include pigmentation side effects caused by various medicines, or the appearance of dark spots associated with the use of cosmetics of inadequate quality.

Biology, so internal factors may develop pigment spots for several reasons. These include processes that cause hormonal changes, such as the time of pregnancy, or menopause, when so-called liver spots may appear on our skin around the cheeks and forehead. If the disorder caused by hormones removes, then the spots may also be lightened, but they do not always disappear.

Pigment spots can be caused by scars left over from acne on problematic skin, by a change in skin colour, or by a scar left behind after a previous burn wound. Nevertheless, there is a certain age when dark spots appear on the hands and forearms – these are age spots.

How to treat pigment spots?

This is a very complex issue, because if we are not properly suited to lightening and removing pigment spots, there is a risk that they will reappear or become permanent.

If an internal organ problem, the inadequate functioning of the excretory system is behind the pigmentation disorder, then it is worth implementing a detoxification program into your daily diet (this is usually indicated by dark spots between the eyebrows and under the eyes)
